Miri is more than just a booming oil and timber town; it is the gateway to the northeast region, rapidly becoming Sarawak's most popular tourist area. The town is also gaining a reputation for swinging nightlife as it caters to oil workers and weekend visitors from neighboring Brunei.
The town's rapid growth has meant the opening of several modern shopping malls, but near the old harbors there are handicraft shops. Exotic jungle produce can be found at the native market opposite the main bus station. The town's most famous landmark is the grand Old Lady on top of Canada Hill, the first well to strike oil in 191 0. These days production is offshore and some of the platforms can be seen from Canada Hill.

date in the Chinese calendar.
Food plays a big part in the celebration from the family dinners that mark the opening of the festival to the delicacies and cakes served to visitors at open house.
Visiting children (and young unmarried people) are given Ang Pow, lucky red packets containing money.
Red is everywhere, as the color is deemed auspicious. Everywhere too is Lion and Dragon Dances, with troupes from the local temple performing acrobatic feats to the sound of drums and cymbals to drive away evil spirits.
Starting at the new moon the festival goes on for 15 days to the full moon. The final day, chap go mei, is often called Chinese Valentine's Day for on this day unmarried girls go to the temple to pray for a good husband.
